What’s the Difference Between English and German Knitting?

16/04/2025

Ever wondered why some knitters throw their yarn while others seem to pick it like magic? Let's explore the two most common knitting styles – and how to find the one that suits you best.

🎩 Two Styles – One Goal: Beautiful Stitches

Here's a quick rundown of the two techniques:

🏴 English Style (Throwing / American Style)

You hold the working yarn in your right hand and "throw" it around the needle. This method is common in the UK and US.

Pros:

  • Great for beginners
  • Many tutorials use this style
  • Ideal for a loose stitch pattern

Cons:

  • Slower than continental knitting

  • Can be tiring for wrists with many motions

🇩🇪 Continental / German Style (Picking / European Style)

You hold the working yarn in your left hand and "pick" it with the needle. This method is popular across Europe.

Pros:

  • Fast and efficient – great for large projects
  • Less motion = more ergonomic
  • Excellent for tight, even stitches

Cons:

  • Requires some yarn tension control

  • A bit tricky for complete beginners
