Knitting connects generations

🧓 Knitting with seniors: Giving time instead of things
When stitches tell stories.
A ball of yarn. Two hands ready to knit. And lots of smiles.
That's the recipe for a heartfelt project that's especially close to mine.
At regular intervals, I visit seniors in assisted living facilities – in close cooperation with the care organization SBZ – to work on knitting projects together.
The result? Not just beautiful handmade pieces, but also precious moments of connection.
🧶 For me, knitting with elderly people is so much more than just a creative gathering:
It's about giving time. Offering attention. And adding a little poetry to everyday life – with needles and thread.
We laugh together, share stories, sit in silence, count stitches, and even unravel when needed – and all of it is perfectly okay.
And here's the beautiful part: good things come from it, too.
The finished items are passed on with love – as donations to charitable causes, such as a women's shelter for Christmas, a fundraising bazaar at a disability center, or a child going through a tough time.
But this project doesn't just bring joy – it also supports wellbeing:
🧠 Knitting improves hand-eye coordination, strengthens memory and focus – and is a soothing balm against loneliness.
🖐️ Even arthritis and stiff joints can benefit from gentle, regular movement.
Because sometimes, all it takes is a little yarn and a little time
to add more meaning to a day – and more smiles to a life.
